 MEN'S 100M  Day 8 Saturday, Aug. 16
Tyson Gay (USA) vs. Asafa Powell (JAM) vs. Usain Bolt (JAM)

Bolt
Powell
Gay
The three-way, head-to-head-to-head battle in the men's 100m is a triangle that defies the transitive property. There is no clear favorite among American Tyson Gay and Jamaicans Asafa Powell and Usain Bolt; each has a little something on another, but no one has routinely beaten the other two.

Gay > Powell: Powell won every 100m race he entered in 2007, except the one time he raced Gay at the World Championships. (Gay took gold; Powell slid to bronze.) Gay seems to have the mental edge over Powell, who admitted after the race that he "just panicked and tightened up" when Gay got a good start.

Bolt > Gay: At a New York meet in May, running the 100m for just the fifth time in his life, Bolt set the 100m world record with a 9.72. Gay finished second. Bolt describes himself as a 200m specialist but said of the record, "I wasn't looking for a world record, but it was there for the taking." Of the Gay/Powell/Bolt trio, Bolt is the only one who will race both the 100m and 200m in Beijing.

Powell > Bolt: Less than a month before the Olympic final, the two Jamaicans raced the 100m at a July meet in Stockholm. Powell took advantage of Bolt's slow start and beat the world-record holder by .01 of a second.

Landrum Athletics & Dyngey Visit Texas A&M

With the donations from Dynegy, the top students from LMS were able to go on a trip to College Station; the students got to see some of the Corp of Cadets on campus practicing their march, the group spent time with the 12th Man, E King Gill, they visited Kyle Field where the Aggies play football, and they enjoyed many other activities.

Running For The Arts
Two Students and a Teacher
On May 5th two Landrum eighth graders, Jesus and Jose Figueroa participated in the Spring Branch Education Foundation’s Running for the Arts 5K. The monies from the race fund student field trips to the opera, ballet, theater and museums. I signed the boys up on Friday afternoon, and we met at Landrum at 7 a.m. on a Saturday for our adventure.
I tend to run at least two road races a month, so a differently venue was nice. The race begins and finishes at Memorial City Mall., winding through the neighborhood south of Kingsride Drive. I coached the twins a little bit before the start, and fearing they would start too fast, gave them instructions to stick close and leave me until mile two. Volunteers and neighbors lined the course cheering for runners of all speeds, complete with volunteers from various high school marching bands to serenade us.
The remarkable thing about Running for the Arts is the huge number of students and families who come out to support their district’s fundraiser. Most of the kiddos haven’t been coached in race etiquette and line up right at the front of the pack, leaving the faster runners to dodge them when they stop running 100 meters out. It makes for an interesting start! Jesus took off like a rocket and Jose stayed close behind.
The temperatures rose as we pounded the streets of Memorial, keeping our pace right around 6:30. The race director hasn’t published complete results yet, but I think Jesus finished on about 20:44, I finished in 20:47 and Jose followed a few seconds later. The boys were in the tough age group of 15-19, competing against high school and even college runners. Although I  was fourth female, being an “old lady” has its advantages.  I managed to pull in hardware by for being first overall masters female, which is the over 40 designation. The award came with a nice medal and generous gift certificate to Memorial City! I almost felt bad for winning a better prize than my students, but I am proud of them for the huge successes they have earned in Cross Country and Track this year.
I think the best part of the race was the breakfast catered by Berryhill’s Tamales. Yummy breakfast tacos, orange juice, and fresh fruit hit the spot on a warm morning. We feasted on the patio while the Memorial Jazz band played. All in all, a successful race!
